LEARNING AND EDUCATION
 

West Hartford is fortunate to have a wonderful mix of private and public educational institutions. West Hartford Public Schools have two High Schools, three Middle Schools and 11 Elementary Schools. There are eight higher learning centers, 17 private and parochial elementary through high schools, and 31 preschools and daycare facilities.

The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Histosrical Society
is located in the restored 18th-century birthplace and childhood
home of Noah Webster, the creator of the first American dictionary and "Blue-Backed Speller", a teacher, lawyer and early abolitionist. The home was restored by the Noah Webster Foundation, a private 501(c)(3) organization, and opened to the public as a museum in the late 1060s.In 1970, the West Hartford Historical Society merged with the Foundation. Today, the museum building includes the historic house, the Jodik Education Center with a working reproduction open hearth, two exhibition galeries, a newly renovated Vistor Reception Center and the Hamilton Gallery.

The Children's Museum in West Hartford offers hands-on fun with science and nature for younger children and families, school and community groups. At the Museum and in classrooms throughout Connecticut, children are encouraged to become creative thinkers and lifelong learners. Children engage in the interactive labs, workshops, multi-sensory exhibits and demonatrations, a live santuary, state-of-the-art digital science dome plaetarium shows and movies, vacations camps, sleepovers, birthday parties, scout activities and special events.

The West Hartford Reservoirs and Reservoir 6 are the sites of MDC's water treatment facilities, five small reservoirs and more than 3,000 acres of some of the most beautiful woodlands and trails in the region.
A nature lover's paradise, the area features acres of beautiful forestland;there are more than 30 miles of paved and gravel roads for joggers and bicyclists, hiking trails, wheel chair accessible picnic groves, cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.
