History of Southport

During the eighteenth century, Mill River Village was a small community of just a few houses and a wharf at the mouth of the Mill River. The harbor allowed for farm products from the surrounding areas to be shipped to ports in New York and beyond. By 1831, Southport, had evolved into a busy commercial area with stunning homes alongside churches, schools and local shops. As a leading coastal port on the Sound, Southport enjoyed great economic wealth. The railroad would soon arrive, creating new job opportunities while at the same time competing with the shipping industry. Southport was well-known for its quality onions, grown locally and shipped out via the harbor. During the 1890s, 100,000 barrels of Southport onions were shipping each year, along with some other locally grown produce. Southport also served as the area’s financial district. The charm and allure of this quaint New England Village remains today complete with gorgeous Long Island Sound views, stately homes, tree-lined streets and a bustling little downtown.

Southport is truly a seaside gem!
